Amar & Yashasvi is a bio-pharma startup envisaged to manufacture import substitute active pharma ingredients (APIs) by leveraging its collaborations with the in-house research team and world-class research teams from India's most prestigious IITs. India imports enormous quantities of APIs and its intermediates from China to match domestic demands. These include biotechnology-based molecules. Chinese firms manufacturing bio-fermented molecules have mastered bio-fermentation techniques in the last decade. Many of those firms use wild-type microorganism strains in fermentation to yield APIs. These strains often lack necessary proteins and nutrients and are low yielding. They need tedious upstream and downstream processes. However, the economies of scale, ease of process design and market dominance negate low productivity and exhausting upstream-downstream processes of wild-type stains. Being a technology startup, we may not compete with the economies of scale of the Chinese manufacturers in the initial phase of our product manufacturing with their production approach. So, we propose an alternative; a single-recombinant-organism-based method to produce APIs. This method is an advanced frontier technology in gene editing and biotechnology. The approach integrates appropriate traits of multiple wild-type strains and genes expressing necessary proteins into an identified single model organism. Also, the proposed technology eliminates the need for additional upstream and downstream processes employed in wild types. Such advanced, high-yielding, lab-developed stains help us compete against the economies of the scale of the wild-type. At present, the company is engaged in the proposed R&D work and setting up downstream manufacturing facilities for a few bio-fermentation-based import substitute APIs.
