Increased intake of micronutrients through fortification has contributed to the virtual elimination of several deficiency diseases. The Government of India has included food fortification, including rice fortification, under the National Nutrition Mission (Poshan Abhiyan) as a complementary intervention to reduce the prevalence of anemia and malnutrition in India. The Department of Food and Public Distribution, Government of India has approved a Centrally Sponsored Pilot Scheme on Fortification of Rice & its Distribution under Public Distribution System.
