• The Indian Railway has been using with conventional locomotives based on DC series motors followed by adoption of technology based on Gate Turn-Off Thyristors (GTOs) with three phase induction motor based drives. • GTO thyristors have slower switching speeds compared to IGBTs. This slower switching capability limits the efficiency of the propulsion system, as it affects the ability to control the power output with high precision. Consequently, this can lead to reduced overall performance and less efficient operation of the electric locomotives. • The locomotives based on GTO technology are highly unreliable due to obsolescence issues in technology as well non availability of components in time. • This technology is getting obsolete with the recent developments in semi conductor industry like use of IGBTs in power conversion, which are more reliable and easily available. The reliance on GTOs may impede the adoption of newer, more efficient technologies that offer improved performance and lower operational costs. The design and development of indigenous Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) based propulsion systems for electric locomotives of Indian railway will be having several merits as explained below: (i) Cost Efficiency (ii) Enhanced Reliability and Performance (iii) Boost to Domestic Industry (iv) Strategic Independence (v) Customization and Innovation (vi) Economic and Environmental Benefits (vii) Support for Indigenous R&D (viii) Government Support and Policies
