The building sector in India consumes close to 40% of the electricity, which is expected to increase to 76% by 2040 (CSE, 2014). The demand for air conditioners in India is expected to grow from 3.8 million a year to 6.2 million in 2020-21 (Ozone Cell, 2017). The contemporary refrigeration and air-conditioning systems account for significant amount of Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) consumption and high energy use in buildings. Increase in infrastructure development across all major sectors in India has led to high demand of HCFC based solutions.Our Beehive Cooling Installation offers a sustainable and inexpensive alternative by consuming very little energy and no refrigerants. Inspired by the structure of a beehive, the design uses earthen cones to implement the ancient technique of evaporative cooling. Water use is regulated through a water pump for re-circulation. Both earth and water are bio-degradable and a metal frame to support the installation can be easily recycled/reused.The functionally aesthetic installation has already been tested at a factory in Uttar Pradesh. It is recorded that after achieving the cooling effect, the temperature around the installation dropped down to 36 degrees Celsius while the temperature outside remained high at 50 degrees Celsius. The Beehive Installation helps redefine the way we look at cooling systems, a necessary yet ignored component of a building’s functionality. India’s Industrial sector has many similar factories where workers have to work in scorching heat. With a widespread use of this concept, it can even generate employment for potters and other associated professionals.
