Data licence and reuse

The short version: take the numbers, cite the page. We would rather be quoted than protected.

What you may use

The counts, aggregates, charts and rankings published on this site are free to reuse, including commercially, with attribution. That covers city and state totals, industry and stage mixes, the precision breakdown, the Seed Fund ledger and the census reconciliation. If you are writing about the Indian startup ecosystem and one of our figures is useful, use it.

We ask two things. Attribute the source, and link to the page you took the figure from rather than to the home page, so a reader can check it. Second, quote the snapshot: this dataset is a point-in-time sweep, and a number without its snapshot becomes wrong without anyone noticing.

Where it comes from

The underlying records are Indian government open data, published by the Startup India portal and state startup portals and republishable with attribution. 4 of our 14 registered sources carry that permission and are the only ones whose records reach this site. The full table, with each licence, is on the sources page.

What we do not republish

Some sources are used for entity resolution only, which means they help us work out that two records are the same company, and then nothing from them is shown to you. Accelerator batch lists, private portfolio pages and commercial company databases are in that category. Their descriptions, cohort data and portfolio listings never appear on this site and are not covered by any permission we can give you.

Director names from the corporate registry mirror are held internally and never published, in any form, on any page. Registered office address lines are held and never published: they are frequently a founder's home.

Company names and logos

Company names and logos on this site are the property of their respective owners and are shown to identify the company a record refers to. Nothing here implies any endorsement of or affiliation with this site, and no permission we grant over our own figures extends to anyone's trademark. If you are the owner of a mark and want it removed from your record, write to trust@indianstartupmap.com and we will remove it.

No warranty, and one warning

The data is provided as is. We publish 4,53,192 records assembled from public sources, and some of them are wrong, because some of the source records are wrong. A page on this site is not a certificate, not a verification, and not a due diligence artefact. Do not use it as one.

Registration is not an operating signal. A large share of registered startups are dormant, and we have no way to tell you which. The methodology sets out exactly what we do and do not know.

Bulk access

There is no download of the full record set and no public API. If you need one for research or journalism, write and say what you are doing with it: trust@indianstartupmap.com.
