In their own words
My Journey from corporate world to farming to becoming entrepreneur Moving out of the corporate arena, Jitender Sangwan, an MBA from Symbiosis, Pune, opted for sustainable farming Every time I visited Thol my native village, it was so clear that the farmers weren’t happy. They didn’t want their children going into farming because they didn’t think it had a rewarding future, and The more I thought about it, the more convinced I was that if I were going to make a living out of this, I would have to take an alternate route within farming. That’s when I hit upon the idea of doing organic farming and launching my organic brand “Anubal Foods” - Which deals in organic farming and delivering Organic products (Basmati rice, pulses, wheat flour, mustard oil, quinoa and potatoes etc) directly from its own farms in Kurukshetra to homes in Chandigarh, Delhi/NCR and Mumbai. At Anubal, I've completely transformed the conventional method of farming & now selling my produce by working on 'ANM' (Absolutely no mediators) Principal and this has resulted in a new farming process & a satisfied (and, growing) customer base and establish farm to fork model. Sometime in 2012, I decided to abandon the safe haven of the corporate world and moved to my ancestral village Thol, in Haryana to begin farming in a sustainable way. After completing my MBA from Symbiosis, Pune, and working for ten years with companies such as Gati, ICICI Lombard, Aviva and Aircel I felt increasingly motivated to do something for the farming community in Thol, in Haryana’s Kurukshetra district. On visits to my village, I had seen farmers struggling to cultivate profitably, as access to affordable inputs was difficult and irrigation always an uncertainty. I decided that the only way I could help bring about change was by starting to farm the land myself. With barely any knowledge of even such basics as crop cycles, planting and harvesting processes or even what to grow, the first year was a difficult time for me and the fledgling business, Anubal Agro Products. This was especially because I chose to take the organic route, which meant converting the land gradually, over three years, convincing farmers in the vicinity to avoid chemical fertilisers and pesticides, and accept the fact the yields would initially be lower, especially with crops such as pulses and mustard. I took the help of professors at nearby agricultural universities, departments and friends who had adopted sustainable farming practices in my search for natural alternatives to the urea & DAP that were a staple input for all farming activity in the area. Almost four years after I started cultivation, wheat and potato yields on my farm are back to near normal levels. I sells the certified organic produce — wheat, mustard, pulses, basmati and red-skin potatoes — both in local markets and mandis as well as further afield in Chandigarh and the NCR Region, Gurgaon and Mumbai marketing directly to housing societies and to corporate houses, offices & hostels. I hope to encourage healthy eating and the consumption of safe food, initially among the people of this region, and expect that, with increasing awareness, there will be a gradual country-wide shift to natural, chemical-free grains, lentils and vegetables. My family and my circle of friends have been big motivators in this effort and have helped greatly in marketing my organic products. I, through my company “Anubal Agro Products Private Limited” decided to help the farmers through the difficult conversion years by giving them the seeds and technical assistance, and helping them market their crops, in a financial arrangement that involved sharing increasing percentages of the income over successive years. By the fourth year, the soil has been completely converted and certified, yields are healthy and Anubal’s transactions with the farmers have moved to a profit-sharing mode. My next mission is to put in place ‘zero-budget farming’ and ‘bio dynamic farming’, where all the inputs — seeds, fertilizers and pesticides — come from the farm and nothing is bought from outside for zero budget farming & all the inputs are bacteria based biological solution for bio dynamic farming. I also want to set up solar plants to generate power locally so that there is less dependence on the grid, which is unreliable, at best. What we do not know
- no funding signal of any kind
We have no liveness signal for any company on this site: no filings feed, no revenue, no check that the website still resolves. A record existing here means a record exists, not that a business is trading.
