In their own words
Education and mental health are the most challenging areas of concern in India, especially in places where resources are scarce. My idea of Ja'pang was formed out of my experiences with youth and their families over the years of my experience as a counsellor and educator in interiors of Northeast India. The challenges in achieving learning outcomes through formal education system led me and some of my friends to rethink education through an indigenous perspective. Another challenge that most educators and policy makers were facing was the recognition and handling of the mental health challenges on the rise among indigenous youth. These challenges had an impact on their learning and had a ripple effect on their social life, family and career. Activity based learning using indigenous practices like story telling, farming and adventure activities seem to create more impact than the regular classroom activities. these activities helped alleviate mental health issues allowing platform for discussion and increasing help seeking behaviour among adolescents and their families. Though nascent in their growth and presence counselling and adventure based learning is now being looked at as an alternative and addition to regular classroom learning. Such activities are low cost and helps us cater to the most interior and vulnerable communities.
