BharatSE is India's first student-designed open-source Secure Element IP Core for UPI payment hardware. India processes over 18 billion UPI transactions per month, yet every POS terminal and soundbox uses imported secure element chips from NXP, Infineon, and STMicro — creating a critical dependency on foreign silicon for India's payment infrastructure.BharatSE replaces these imported chips with an indigenously designed AES-128 encryption core, PUF-based unclonable device key generation, and hardware tamper detection with automatic key zeroization. The design is NIST FIPS-197 verified and built entirely using free open-source EDA tools including Icarus Verilog and GTKWave.The IP core targets Pine Labs, BharatPe, and Paytm device divisions as potential licensees, with a royalty-based revenue model of Rs 5-10 per chip. At 10 lakh chips per year, this represents Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore in annual recurring revenue from a single customer.Currently at simulation stage with full RTL verification complete. Next step is FPGA prototype followed by DLI scheme application for tape-out funding.
