Biochem Research & Testing Laboratory (BRTL)is a testing laboratory for food, soil & water samples for quality parameters using analytical equipments. This will give the content of particular biochemicals/components in the samples analyzed to detect particular parameter. Range of products tested:  Food grains and milled products - Cereals, pulses, oilseeds and their flours, flour mixes, grits, flakes, puffed and roasted products etc.  Plant analysis for several biochemical parameters.  Bakery products - biscuits, bread, buns, cookies, crackers and other baked products.  Fresh fruits and vegetables.  Processed fruits and vegetables - canned and frozen fruits and vegetables, canned and frozen specialties, dried and dehydrated fruits and vegetables, jams, pickles and chutneys, ketchup, sauces, pastes and other preserved items.  Convenience foods - Snack foods, wafers, powders and mixes, instant mixes, noodles, pasta/vermicelli [Ready to eat (RTE) & Ready to cook (RTC)].  Beverages - Soft drinks, soft drink concentrates, fruit drink, fruit juice, fruit nectar, malted beverages, wines, liquors.  Dairy products - Fluid milk, butter, cheese, ghee, milk powder, condensed milk, infant milk food, malted milk food, ice-cream, flavored milk.  Meat products - Fish, egg and other poultry products.  Sugar and confectionery products - Candy, caramels, chocolate, traditional Indian confections.  Spices and condiments -All spices, basil, capsicums, celery Seed, chillies, cinnamon cloves, coriander, chilli powder.  Soil - pH, electric conductivity, micro/macronutrients and pesticides.  Water - micro/macronutrients, pH etc. Parameters tested for food, soil & water: i. Physical Testing: Colour, specific gravity, bulk density, true density, porosity, water activity, rheology - viscosity, texture analysis (hardness, cohesiveness, springiness, gumminess, chewiness), total soluble solids, refractive index, free fatty acids (acid value), saponification value, iodine value, peroxide value, melting point. ii. Chemical, nutritional & enzyme analysis : • Proximate and chemical analysis: Moisture, total solids, protein, fat, ash, carbohydrates, reducing, non-reducing sugars, starch components (amylose & amylopectin), total calories, pH, titratable acidity, amino acid profile, fatty acid profile. • Nutritional analysis: Minerals (iron, calcium, phosphorus), Vitamins (Vitamin A, Vitamin C, thiamine, riboflavin, folic acid, niacin), dietary fiber, Beta carotene, lycopene, chlorophyll, anthocyanins & anthocyanidins, tannins, trypsin inhibitor, phytates. • Enzyme analysis: Peroxidase, Catalase, Superoxide Dismutase, Lipase, Carboxylase etc. iii. Food ingredient testing: • Food additives and preservatives-Sodium chloride, sulphur dioxide, sodium benzoate, sorbic acid • Synthetic colours - Amaranth, fast red E, poncea, erythrosine, sunset yellow, tartrazine NS, indigo carmine, brilliant black BN, annatto • Stabilizing agents - Alginates, methyl cellulose, agar, starch, CMC, Locust bean gum, karaya, gelatin • Antioxidants- Gallates, BHA, BHT, TBHQ • Artificial sweeteners- Saccharin, aspartame, sucralose. iv. Microbiological tests: Coliforms, E.coli, fecal coliforms, fecal streptococci, plate count – bacterial, psuedomonas aeruginosa, salmonella, shigella, staph. aureus, sulphite reducing anaerobes, vibrio cholerae, vibrio parahemolyticus, yeast & mould count. v. Contaminants and toxicants analysis (Food safety): Targeted and non-targeted analysis of mycotoxin (including aflatoxins), pesticide residues analysis, veterinary drug residues, acryl amides & heavy metal analysis (lead, copper, zinc, arsenic, tin, cadmium, mercury), genetically modified organisms. vi. Water quality analysis: • Physical analysis - Clarity, color, odour and taste, turbidity. • Chemical analysis - Total solids, hardness, alkalinity, acidity, pH, nitrates, nitrites, free ammonia, chlorides, sulphates, BOD, COD and pesticide residue analysis in drinking water. • Microbiological examination - Plate count, coliform count, faecal streptococci test, chlostridium welchi test. vii. Soil quality analysis: pH, Electric conductivity, Organic carbon, Nitrogen, Phosphorous (P2O5), Potassium (K20), Zinc, Iron, Copper, Manganeese, Boron, molybdinum.
