Exposure to unhealthy urban environments especially pollution, allergens, dust, temperature, noise, relative humidity and ultra violet radiation impacts life and its quality in the short as well as long term. However, majority of citizens are not aware of the situation or are not certain of when and what measures to take preventive or protective actions. Currently environmental parameters are being monitored by only selected government agencies, but unfortunately the number of instruments and their density are not enough to provide a location or individual specific warning to urban residents. Further, the warnings are not being able to be translated into advisories at a community level, thereby leading to people not bring able to internalise the warnings and take informed actions. UrHealth is a device developed by us, to monitor environmental health risks of individuals and their family. UrHealth is an ideal device to monitor one’s immediate environment, providing microenvironment analysis that will eventually end up being a grid map. Through improved monitoring we plan to provide its users personalized alerts, warning and easy to do actions which are relevant to the individual’s exposure and health condition. Further, through gamification, an interconnected network of UrHealth devices will encourage citizens to contribute environmental data to their communities, thereby co-creating and generating a clear picture of the urban scenario. The consolidated information as maps if shared with urban managers and policy makers along with recommendations to take mitigative actions can help in informed macro level decisions leading contributing towards healthy and liveable environment.
