A NOVEL ARTIFICIAL HEART FOR LONG TERM THERAPY ALTERNATIVE TO HEART TRANSPLANT Aim Design an Artificial Heart which functions for a lifetime with an average period of 20-50 years. It will be a destination therapy (permanent treatment), rather than temporary. It is designed to have no valves to avoid turbulence of blood to achieve smooth flow. It doesn’t require anti– coagulants and there is no need for continuous medical supervision. Our aim is to design a novel device which is simply “implant and forget” that gives a good quality life and normal life expectancy. The new design of Artificial Heart is completely different from existing Artificial Heart/Left Ventricular Assist Device. Introduction: Every year more than 100,000 people die of heart failure in the US alone. Every day, about 2,700 patients die of heart disease. The present treatment for end stage heart disease is transplantation. Either transplantation using an autologous heart or a mechanical heart. But both these options have got limitations or disadvantages. If it is heart transplant, then the availability of suitable donors, difficulty in immunosuppression cost and prone to infection are to be focused. Apart from constant medical supervision, we need the patients to lead a restricted life. A very successful heart transplanted patient lives a good quality life for an average of 5-10 years. Disadvantages of Existing Artificial Hearts/LVADs: Artificial Hearts are implanted due to donor shortage. Many of the currently used Artificial Hearts provide linear stream-like flow without a pulsatile pattern (non- physiological). They have at least 2-4 prosthetic valves, which cause turbulence leading to emboli and clot formation and it can damage the end organs like Brain, Kidney and Liver etc. They require blood thinning tablets (anti-coagulants) to avoid these problems however; it has its own complications like excessive bleeding.
