According to the latest UN estimate, The global population reached 8 billion on 15 November 2022. The latest projections also suggest that the world’s population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050. It is projected to reach a peak of around 10.4 billion people during the 2080s and to remain at that level until 2100. Global life expectancy at birth reached 72.8 years in 2019, an improvement of almost 9 years since 1990. Further reductions in mortality are projected to result in an average global longevity of around 77.2 years in 2050. [1] Providing services to this huge population on time is a big challenge and one thing that happens when people want services in a crowd is queues, waiting rooms and frustrating experiences while waiting. One of the everyday things almost everyone experiences in the world is waiting. We wait at nearly every retail establishment we visit on daily basis. Irrespective of the place being an airport, cafe, salon, bank, car wash, or movie theatre, our waiting experience doesn’t vary much. We spend it staring into our phones and going into a social media limbo or listening to music or watching videos/reels etc. If we were to recall what we did in the 100s of hours we waited in the past year there would be very few memorable things, hence the experience is more of a passing time, not proper customer engagement.
