The environment is one of the key drivers of the economy in the current global business arena. Of the various activities built around green initiatives, most assume the form of not-for-profit organizations and therefore are at best a little better than failures. Any environmental business, to be of any significant impact, needs to be taken up at a large scale, which demands the involvement of highly talented and committed people and a cutting edge technology to ensure that the efficiency is optimal. It is therefore important that there is a substantial profit incentive built into the business model to attract talent and ensure the sustainability and growth of the business. Technological advantage helps in building a substantial profit incentive into the business model by lower operating costs, cleaner operations, higher productivity, better quality and therefore profitability of the business which ensures that the business remains sustainable. Of the various green initiatives, waste recycling is one amongst those creating the highest positive impact on the environment as compared to any other initiatives. However considering the various challenges involved, the ‘image’ of the business and the nature of the current market place, it has been a grossly neglected sector. Secondly, management of all types of waste is not economically lucrative without government support in the form of subsidies or viability gap funding. However certain types such as plastic, rubber, metals, electronic waste, are profitable. Of all different types of waste generated on the planet, electronic waste is the fastest growing and has the highest intrinsic value due to its basic composition. However, the sector is a very nascent one with only a handful of corporate players at the global level and even lesser in India. The collection and processing of e-waste for recovering precious assets are highly technology-intensive. Also, the recovery processes are different for different types of e-waste many of which are technically and environmentally challenging. Most of the electronic waste management sector is currently handled by the unorganized/informal sector in India. This is predominantly because of the legacy of scrap trade, rag picking and scavenging activities traditionally performed by the economically and socially lower strata of the Indian society. Parts of the same networks have also adopted electronic waste as their pick. However, due to lack of skills, knowledge, financial power, awareness, etc., the sector has remained highly labour intensive, environmentally unfriendly, unhealthy (and therefore restricted to the domain of the economically deprived) and masked as a low cost, low-profit business. However, in reality, if done in the right way, and in an organized fashion with innovative technology at the core of the processing, e-waste management has the potential of becoming one of the dominant sectors. There have been success stories from across the globe in this area. However, in India, it has seen only moderate success. Against this backdrop, M/s EnviroKare Recycling Solutions Pvt Ltd proposes to start an e-waste recycling unit. We find that the e-waste business is highly lucrative from the economic as well as environmental perspective.The financial ratios clearly show that this business is an extremely healthy proposition.
