Currently, Vitamin D supplementation in the form of pharmaceutical drugs is the most effective way to prevent and treat Vitamin D deficiency. Apart from drugs, fortification of staple foods with vitamin D is a viable strategy to target a large population to reduce the vitamin D deficiency. Idea of the proposed approach is unique in nature for reducing the vitamin D deficiency in Indian population (especially for office bearers and urban people). There are no natural Vitamin D rich animal and poultry products such as eggs, milk and milk products available in Indian market. Though some companies are producing vitamin D rich milk and milk products, it is costly, not available to people of all socioeconomic groups and it is purely a fortified product. The principle of this project is totally different from fortification which solely emphasizes on availability of natural vitamin D rich poultry and animal products from chicken and cows which fortunately have the internal mechanism of producing low concentration of vitamin D in their eggs and milk. The animal feed will be prepared from fresh water phytoplanktons and edible plant parts of Solanaceae family which are easily available in nature and also can be grown for large scale production. This project is having its internal theme to improve the economy of the dairy and poultry farmers in terms of selling vitamin D rich animal products with more price than the normal products now available in the market.
