In their own words
Hosa Belaku Artisans Foundation is a reincarnation of Belaku Trust which was established about 20+ years ago by Dr. Saraswathy Ganapathi, w/o Shri Girish Karnad to provide income generation activities to rural women affected by alcohol abuse and disabilities. There are 21 women and one young man with severe disability, based out of remote villages around Sathnur (beyond Kanakapura thaluk) for whom this is the only income generation activity providing them with cash flow throughout the year. The women work from three small workshops in their respective villages (Achalu, Halsuru and Kadahalli) making varieties of products. Hosa Belaku Artisans Foundation’s establishment got necessitated when the Founder of Belaku Trust decided to wind up the income generation program due to internal reasons. When the women expressed their deep desire to continue with the activities need to establish a new entity arose. Established in the year 2017 the new entity started with 20 artisans and no raw materials or products. Initially, the Founders invested in raw materials and an honorarium of the artisans from their own means. A meager investment of 10 lakhs over the period so far saw the beginning of a new journey for the women. Over the two and half years the new entity has not only managed to keep the activities up float but also almost break even. The entity is facing a huge challenge of cash flow and building stock for sales and continued income generation. Time and again the products have proved to be in demand and generally liked by the public. There is a good opportunity for the organization to grow and reach newer heights of success.
