INSECTIFii India Pvt. Ltd. is India’s first commercial scale insect farming business. We rear an insect called Black Soldier Fly Larvae (“BSFL”) on a diet of urban organic waste. BSFL are non-pests, non-pathogenic insects. In the larvae (worm) form they feed on any organic matter and consume an amount of twice their body weight per day, thus bioconverting this organic waste into protein and fat stored in its body. INSECTIFii hence converts waste into versatile, high-quality insect protein/oil which is intended to serve the growing protein/oil demand in the poultry and aquacultre feed industry, in an environmentally and economically sustainable way. The protein and oil extracted from the larvae are a ready substitute for traditional protein/oil sources which are plant-derived (mainly soya), as well as for fish-derived protein (called fishmeal) and fish oil. These traditional sources currently used have highly fluctuating price and quality. In addition, they are environmentally very taxing and degrading to cultivate. Hence, they are an unsustainable source to serve the challenge of feeding the growing population combined with reducing availability of cultivable land, water, and marine stock.
