It was during Covid that we were searching for products to increase our immune system and those of our loved ones. Our search led us to Lakhadong Turmeric the only turmeric in the world with the high curcumin content (7.5%) compared to other turmerics farmed which have 2-3% curcumin content. This led us to Meghalaya a beautiful state in the NE of India, and to the Jaintia Hills where this particular turmeric is farmed but in reasonable and unpredictable quantities . The government of Meghalaya is also promoting this turmeric under the able leadership of its Chief Minister. Once we identified the women farmers we realised the other spices that were available in the area , all of which contribute to our good health. The WILDHOP team got to work and developed two products , easy to have and yet with long term health benefits. In the process of our research , we also came across the stories of the women farmers who toil hard in their fields to produce these spices. Meghalaya, being a matrilineal society has property coming down to the youngest daughter of the family. The girls marry young, teenage pregnancies are common and with high rate of school drop outs for various reasons primary being poverty, family planning concepts are almost absent. These women suffer malnutrition and low life expectancy . The WildHop team decided to work only with these women led self help groups (SHG’s), and hope to take their stories to the world, while also looking at boosting immunity and preventing common cold and coughs which sometimes are a result of pollution. The proceeds from the sale of these products will go to these SHG’s in the hope that their quality of life increases. With time we would want to help with their education and health too.
