In their own words
Locavore is at the forefront of the technological revolution happening in agriculture today. The conventional model of agriculture has become unsustainable for farmers and consumers alike and puts a heavy burden on the environment. As the planet’s population approaches 10 billion and climate change threatens food security, newer models of agriculture are urgently needed. Locavore is addressing this challenge with its low-cost, low-impact hydroponics model. Commercial hydroponics has been a capital-intensive business and limited to producing select crops that are sold at a premium. Locavore has made multiple innovations to hydroponic structures, crop nutrients, and artificial lighting to reduce costs by an order of magnitude as compared to our peers worldwide. We produce up to 100x the output of conventional farms with 90% less water and nutrients, 100% renewable energy, and no pesticides. We provide our customers with a wide range of healthy, fresh, local produce at unbeatable costs. Our hydroponic structures have been crafted in-house to ensure strength, durability, and protection from pathogens while being cost-effective. We use different structures suited to different crops – NFT channels for leafy greens and strawberries, Dutch buckets for trellising crops, and stacked systems for herbs. Our nutrients are designed by us and precisely tailored to the crops’ needs. No synthetic pesticides will ever be used by us; we rely instead on organic ways to protect our crops. Finally, our approach to artificial lighting has made it feasible to be used in developing countries without being prohibitively expensive, using only renewable energy. With farms already covering 40% of our planet and crop yields declining due to climate change, we believe vertical farming will have an important role to play in ensuring food security. Key to that is ensuring the sustainability of artificial lighting in vertical farms. All of these elements come together to create the farm of the future at Locavore.
