Abstract Dr. Uddip Kashyap Department of Mechanical Engineering IIT Bombay, Mumbai-400076 Transportation of fluids such as oil and natural gases through pipelines is crucial and utmost precaution needed to be taken to avoid leakage or burst of these pipelines. From the study of the current technologies in leakage and burst detection in pipelines, it is seen that in-pipe methods may yield good resolution, if high resolution sensors are used with data monitoring. One such high resolution technique is usage of optical cables. However, it does not support most of the existing pipelines. Further, apart from adding cost, the results are significantly affected by reflections from the surroundings of the pipelines. In this work, a novel detection method for these fluids carrying pipes is proposed. Metallic strips comprise of parallel plates are used to predict the length at which the discontinuity is witnessed. These strips are inscribed on the surface of the pipeline. The self-capacitance of the strip is directly proportional to the length. The reduction in length results in a reduction in the value of self-capacitance. For a strip breadth of 0.001 m, the reported accuracy for detection of discontinuity is ±0.04 m. Further, the cost of the proposed arrangement for a range of 1 km is $8.
