As per WHO, over 20% of the Indian population suffers from at least one form of chronic disease and over 10% of the population has more than 1 disease. Nearly 5.8 million people die from chronic diseases per year – this translates to risk of 1 in 4 Indians dying before 70 years of age (ref: WHO: The global burden of disease). Poor adherence to drug treatment of chronic diseases or long term illnesses is a worldwide problem of a striking magnitude. Research suggests that non – adherence rates in India range from 50% to 80% across various chronic illnesses (ref: World Health Organization 2003 Adherence to long-term therapies: evidence for action, ISBN 978-92-4-154599-0; https://doi.org/10.1007/s12664-009-0050). This also translates to higher economic burden on the patients as eventually complications arise leading to increased hospitalizations. Pharmaceutical companies suffer major revenue loss due to therapy non – adherence by patients. DoseTap device and analytics platform are aimed at increasing patient adherence to medication regimen, especially in people who forget to take right medicines at the right time which is seen in 60-80% of all non- adherent cases. In the event of doses being missed by the patient or non – usage of the device, the associated caregivers (family/ friends) and/ or the doctor at remote locations, receive an alert. They can then inform the patient to take the prescribed medication. This enables real time remote monitoring of the patient. DoseTap will truly help patients and caregivers in a country like India which has an aging population, where lifestyle diseases are on the rise and the pressure on existing resources like doctors and healthcare centres continues to grow. Doctors and hospitals will greatly benefit from DoseTap due to remote monitoring and this will help reduce the patients dropping off from therapy and then coming back later with difficult to treat complications due to non-adherence.
