Cancer therapy have been in the forefront of Biopharma focus over the last two decades, with more and more cancer drugs getting approval. Unfortunately, the five-year survival of patients with metastatic cancer (i.e. spreading of the primary tumor to secondary organs in the body) have seen almost no improvement. This is because metastasis targeted therapy is still elusive and is one of the final frontiers of cancer research, that needs to be conquered. Clinicians are confounded by the paradox of identical tumors between two patients eventually branching out, one patients metastasizes, while the others don’t. In numerous cases, cancer often goes into remission, only to come back months or years later, at a secondary organ; a dormant period preceding before metastatic spread. Since the biology of such dormancy and metastasis is poorly understood, there is almost no treatment for cancer metastasis, a stage which is often synonymus to the last few days in the life of a patient. Mestastop aims to understand metastasis biology and address the gap in metastasis targeted drug discovery. Our objective is to create a platform that characterizes typical metastasis causing cells via multiple functional cell-based assays, each mimicking a unique facet of the metastatic process. Collectively, all these assays will enable us to create a unique patient derived algorithm (for any specific cancer type, e.g. colon or triple negative breast cancer) that will help in predicting metastasis in patients with non-metastasized primary tumors and eventually help discovery scientists screen for new therapies. Such a discovery approach would be phenotypic and will accommodate both polypharmacology or drug repurposing and should have wide acceptability.
