Textile and Handicraft industry has witnessed rapid growth over the last few years. The Indian textiles industry, currently estimated at around US$ 150 billion, is expected to reach US$ 250 billion by 2019. India’s textiles industry contributed seven per cent of the industry output (in value terms) of India in 2017-18.It contributed two per cent to the GDP of India and employs more than 45 million people in 2017-18. The sector contributed 15 per cent to the export earnings of India in 2017-18. In Handicraft Sector, it is the largest employment generators and accounts for a significant share in the country’s exports. The state and regional clusters contribute significantly to handicrafts export. The Indian handicrafts industry is fragmented, with more than seven million regional artisans and more than 67,000 exporters/export houses promoting regional art and craftsmanship in the domestic and global markets. In recent time, despite there is a higher potentiality of value addition in Textile and Handicraft sector, it is seen that lack of access to modern technology, innovation, updated/modern tools and training skills have resulted in manufacturing of poor quality products, thereby, decreasing market sustainability of these products. Therefore, there is an urgent need of upgrade these cottage industries by providing necessary skills and other assistance for the sustainability of the sector.
