Due to the negative environmental impacts of synthetic plastics, the development of biodegradable plastics for both industrial and commercial applications is essential today. Researchers from the industries have developed various starch-based bioplastics for different applications. Starch bioplastics have found many advantages (easy processing cost and low raw materials cost) to be employed as single-use plastics compared to other bioplastics. The starch extracted from different biomass cannot be used to produce bioplastics; instead, it must first be converted into thermoplastic starch with suitable plasticizers and additional additives, thereby could be used as bioplastics. In India, there are very few starch-based bioplastic manufacturers using other expensive biopolymers such as polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) as additives to achieve desired properties depending on end-use applications. However, through our start-up, we have developed innovative technologies to use sustainable and cheap additives instead of expensive additives such as PLA and PBAT. These cheap and sustainable additives could produce relatively cheap and eco-friendly starch bioplastics. We have developed unique and highly cost-effective additives mainly derived from agricultural waste. We can scale up the production of starch bioplastics using these eco-friendly additives depending on the market demand since these agricultural-based additives are cheap and easily available.
