INNOVATION: Concrete is the most used material for construction today. It is a mixture of cement, water, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate and admixtures. River sand is widely used as a fine aggregate to prepare concrete and is formed by weathering of rocks. Weathering from rocks to form sand takes a long-time. Hence, the amount of river sand available is inadequate to cater the demand. At OHIO ENTERPRISES we provide an alternative to river sand through the application of manufactured sand in concrete as a fine aggregate instead of natural river sand. The river sand is consumed continuously, and it poses a serious threat to the environment. Erosion of the river bed, loss of vegetation on the river bank, lowering the water table, landslides, etc are some of the consequences of excessive sand mining from the river bed. The reason for erosion is the continuous mining of sand from rivers. Therefore, environmental authorities are acting to their best to reduce the mining of river sand from river beds. If the consumption of river sand is to be restricted, other types of fine aggregates that can replace river sand should be introduced. Currently some alternative materials are used as fine aggregates in the concrete industry: sea sand, crushed sand, mined sand and manufactured sand. In sea sand, presence of chloride ion is high, and it has shell particles. So, it affects the long-term durability of concrete structures. In mining sand, the presence of clay is high, and it also causes environmental impacts like river sand. Further, it affects the strength development of concrete. Crushed sand is a by-product from the crusher plant and has a high percentage of fine particles (lower than 75 µm), while the presence of impurities is high, and shape of particles is angular, thus, affecting the workability of concrete. Manufactured sand is a by-product from the crusher plant. However, its’ properties are modified to improve the performance of the aggregate in concrete. Manufactured sand has been used as an alternative to river sand in western countries for the past few decades. Recently, it is increasingly being used in concrete in India too. Flow chart shows the production process of manufactured sand. Vertical shaft impact (VSI) crusher is used to produce high quality cubically shaped sand particles. Final product from VSI crusher is called as manufactured sand.
