Pet foods can be generally segmented into dry, wet (canned or moist), semi-moist, treats (or snacks), and raw/frozen/refrigerated dog and cat foods. Dry pet food may contain around 5–12% moisture, semi-moist pet food 22–35% moisture, and wet pet food more than 65% moisture. Dry pet food is the largest segment in the pet food market. Different pet foods have varying oxidative stability and shelf life. This section will focus on the oxidative stability and shelf life of dry dog and cat food. Why is the oxidative stability and shelf life study critical for dry pet food? This is because lipid oxidation may change the color, taste, and odor of dry pet food, leading to decrease in nutrients, palatability, and the quality of the dry pet food. Therefore, a pet food company must make sure that the developed dry pet food products have their claimed shelf life.
