Problem Statement: Cervical Cancer in India is the second most fatal cancer among women, with over 64,000 deaths in 2018 and about 1 lac new cases registered every year (highest globally). What is particularly worrying - out of the total fatalities worldwide, less than 10% occurs in developed countries and the rest 90% are concentrated in India and other LMI Countries. This is because Cervical Cancer has an especially long pre-malignant stage, hence risks in women undergoing regular periodic PAP/HPV test (in developed countries) are ascertained and cured in time. Women in India are dying of a “Curable” disease Need Identification: Why do women in India do not undergo regular periodic screening? Awareness is not an issue with Cervical Cancer screening - as much as accessibility, acceptance and reach Hence women in India, even though are aware of the risks of Cervical Cancer and the availability of PAP test - do not undergo periodic screening because: • Feeling of embarrassment and shame • Availability and locating a Gynecologist, taking time out of one’s busy schedule • Reluctance to having a physician see and touch their genital area (in certain sociocultural groups) • Women who have been sexually abused or who have experienced intimate partner violence are often uncomfortable with a standard pelvic exam • The experience of discomfort or pain at a past clinical visit can discourage women from repeat testing. Product: Our team at Pragmatech Solutions has developed a self-use (DIY), disposable, hand-held device which can be used to collect cells from the cervix without any medical assistance. The samples obtained from this device can be used for testing through HPV PCR Test and/or Liquid Cytology. Prototype ready, tested, Design patent obtained, Provisional Patent filed, first of its kind in India Low cost – costs 10-15 times less than similar variants available in other countries. Sample collected only once can be used for sequential triage testing: HPV followed by LBC Solution: Empowering women to do this test discreetly (HPV can be self-subscribed as against PAP which is a biopsy test) • At their place of choice: Without a need to locate a Gynecologist • With considerably less pain: So that women return for their periodic testing, • Reducing the burden on the Gynecologist and preventing re-use of metal speculums (at camps) thereby eliminating transmissible infection. The Go-to-Market strategy will hence involve three areas: B2C (As a ready to use kit which can be bought online), B2B (NGOs conducting Screening camps) B2B (Labs and Clinics).
