Pravara Engineered Materials Private Limited is a technology-driven startup engaged in the development, commercialisation and large-scale deployment of sustainable engineered materials manufactured from industrial by-products. The startup is commercialising an innovative technology for converting fly ash into engineered granular material, referred to as FAB Sand, through controlled material formulation, pelletisation, stabilisation and curing. The technology has been developed in association with the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar and is intended to provide a high-volume and value-added utilisation pathway for fly ash. The major problem addressed by the startup is the continued accumulation and disposal of fly ash generated by thermal power plants and other industries. Conventional disposal through ash ponds and land-based storage requires substantial land, transportation, water and long-term environmental management. At the same time, infrastructure and industrial projects depend heavily on natural sand and quarried granular materials, resulting in depletion of natural resources and environmental impacts associated with mining and transportation. Pravara Engineered Materials addresses these challenges by converting fly ash into an engineered substitute for natural sand and conventional filling materials for suitable applications. The proposed product can be used in mine void filling, engineered backfilling, reclamation works, ash pond rehabilitation, drainage layers, ground improvement and other infrastructure and industrial applications, subject to application-specific validation. The key innovation lies in the controlled conversion of fine fly ash into engineered particles having defined gradation, density, strength, permeability and durability characteristics.
