SaptKrishi is a female-led start-up incubated at IIT Kanpur with women in decisive roles who are determined to work towards agricultural innovation and the transformation of rural South-East Asia. As a social enterprise, the focus sector for its first phase is the development of low-cost storage and transportation solution for farmers and traders engaged with horticulture and floriculture. The extremely short shelf life of horticultural and floricultural produce results in a big chunk of the produce not making it to the market at all and ends up getting wasted. Saptkrishi will address this issue and work on reducing waste by the provision of affordable technology directly to individual farmers, cooperatives, and traders to ensure better post-harvest outcomes. Social Issue Our enterprise has developed a minimum viable product termed as the 'sabzi kothi,' colloquially translated to a chamber of vegetables, that can be utilized for the storage of perishable fruit and vegetable produce ranging from 10 to 40 days depending upon the particular crop. The chamber can be used to store and transport flowers as well. Further research and development of the product will add value to it and determine its feasibility in varying environments of use. A massive amount of post-harvest losses can be diminished provided contextually apt storage solutions are in place. Most of the farmers in India are far removed from routes served by cold storage chains. The 'sabzi kothi shall address the uneven distribution of and access to cold storage facilities.'
