Sense Kaleidoscopes – A Unit of Ayathi Trust, is a charitable trust set-up with the intent to serve the community of autistics. We started our journey as the only art college in India that ensures artistic excellence through an autism-specific Bachelors in Fine Arts program. It is an evolving strength-based curriculum designed for and with the Autistic community to ensure that people with disabilities irrespective of backgrounds and challenges can access the arts while building sustainable vocational skills. This helps to break stigmas and build an identity of purpose as a contributing member of the society. Our artists validated our process by showcasing and selling out at the Kochi Biennale "Outsider Artist" exhibition. SK was the only art school that was invited to showcase at the "Outsider Art" Fair in Paris. Most of our artists earn while they learn through commissions, sales of artworks, merchandise deals and corporate gifting projects. We are a small team ensuring artistic, emotional, financial and livelihood independence or semi-independence for autistics. We assist with the curation of artworks, branding of artists and building of sustainable artistic collectives to enable creative practices to help achieve their full potential. The intention is to build an artistic practice for life that is abundant and inspiring. While we enable sustainable vocations, we noticed that most of the adults we worked with were developing mental illnesses due to extremely poor cognition. Cognitive regression in autism is rampant in India due to the lack of a structured primary and secondary educational program. Parallelly, we piloted an academic program with a few students. This led to the development of an autism specific academic primary program which imparts education on a strength-based curriculum through play, lesson plans delivered via interactive smartboards within curated environments using research based experiential and sensorial teaching methodologies. During Covid-19, we tested our art and academic curriculums online which helped us understand that we could scale this effort to benefit many neuro-divergents in India. These groundbreaking solutions are aimed at nurturing and engaging cognitive and creative environments for neuro-divergents which is a dire need in India today. We believe that this solution can translate into an EdTech platform. The Ed. Tech will host a validated art and academic curriculum thus, providing a culturally contextualized, autism-specific and impact driven program to help neuro-divergents and other PWDs access a form of education that is specifically designed to help them achieve their true potential.
