Inflight connectivity (IFC) is generally slow, spotty, and very expensive. The aircraft gets internet by either of the two methods, Air-to-ground (ATG) where antennas on the belly of the plane pick up signals from towers on the ground, and Satellites where the antennas on top of the plane pick up signals from the satellites. Because the plane is flying at a certain speed the signal is weak and the internet is slow. Satellite internet is expensive and cell towers are not available over water bodies and mountains. We propose to solve this using UAVs and laser communication. The constellation of UAVs at high-altitude would act as cell towers in the sky. The laser beamed from the ground station to the UAVs would be directed to the planes to provide internet at high speeds. The uniqueness of this method for IFC is that it uses UAVs for connectivity which is cheaper to build, fly and recover, unlike satellites which are very expensive to build, launch, and are not recoverable. UAVs can dynamically change their position with the flight path of the plane unlike a static cell tower or a fixed orbit satellite. Laser communication is faster than Radio Frequency (RF) communication because it uses a higher frequency band. It is secure than RF because it is directed at a source rather than dispersed in a radio spectrum. The combined system provides continuous coverage at a fraction of the price compared to a satellite or Air-to-ground internet system. We generate revenue by providing internet to planes through subscription, the same way an internet provider generates revenue through home broadband service.
