STEMI Care implements the STEMI India Model, an innovative system of care for treatment of heart-attacks. Ischaemic heart disease is the leading cause of death in India, with 12% of all premature deaths attributed to heart disease. Over 3 million patients in India suffer from ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI), the deadliest form of heart attack. The STEMI India Model has been proven to reduce mortality by almost 20%. STEMI Care implements this hub-and-spoke model that links tertiary hospitals equipped with cath labs to primary health centres. A multifunctional 12-lead ECG integrated multi-parameter monitoring unit with data entry capability is installed in each hospital. This enables remote diagnosis of ECGs by the cardiologist in the hub hospitals. Evidence-based algorithms advocate the appropriate treatment strategy depending on risk factors, location and other parameters. Linking state-wide ambulance services and government-backed insurance schemes allows for best treatment to every patient, irrespective of location and economic background. The Model is particularly suited for India, focussing on being cost-effective by using existing infrastructure more efficiently and rigorously training personnel. It can be replicated across the country, taking each state’s unique situation into consideration. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) as well as the Cardiological Society of India (CSI) and the Association of Physicians of India (API) have recommended that the STEMI India Model be adopted as the National STEMI Protocol. This has the potential to save lives that might otherwise have been lost, especially those in rural locations and economically backward situations.
