Artificial Insemination (AI) is the first line of treatment for infertile couples suffering from male subfertility, unexplained infertility and cervical factor infertility. AI requires a proper selection of ejaculated sperm before performing the actual treatment. In truth, some components of the seminal fluid might become an obstacle for fertilization when intrauterine insemination is performed (Bjorndahl et al., 2005). Sperm and the additional leukocytes produce many reactive oxygen species that alter the success rate of fertilization after centrifugations. So, segregation of sperms from the other debris is essential to achieve the success rate of artificial insemination. (Aitken & Clarkson, 1988). The standard techniques of sperm preparation consist of density gradient centrifugation, (a combination of the motility and the retention at phase borders), migration (movement of the spermatozoa ) and filtration (adherence to filtration matrices )techniques (Henkel & Schill, 2003) The Androwash device introduced by Subhag Healthtech is a portable centrifuge that is pre-programmed for the double-density gradient method of sperm washing. It is designed exclusively for the purpose of sperm washing. The tubes used with Androwash are specially designed to ease the processes of density gradient formation, transitioning the washed pellet from first to second wash and pellet collection post-wash. It eliminates the chances of human error and allows even a layman to perform the sperm wash effectively.The majority of the hospitals and private clinics are not equipped with sperm washing facilities and definitely require andrologists to perform the washing using a traditional method of the centrifuge. Whereas by using the androwash, the amount and time invested in andrologist and higher-end lab facilities can be reduced to a greater extent, as Subhag's androwash involves automated washing of sperm with limited investment and manpower. Being a novel centrifuge device in the aspect of easy automated handling in the world of infertility treatment, androwash can seamlessly empower the treatment process even in rural healthcare set-ups as it is affordable. The device is in the stage of clinical validation with a maximum number of sperm samples as our pilot study has already confirmed its efficacy to segregate "Total Effective Progressive Motile' (TEPM) sperm at different time intervals compared to traditionally used REMI centrifuge.Developing easy access medical device can progress the treatment process to a greater extent even in the interior Indian districts, where couples are not even aware of the benefits of sperm washing. Our device can definitely benefit the poor couples seeking medical help for infertility and can empower the staffs/nurses of primary health care units of rural India through its simple yet sound technology.
