Problem: Current practice of laparoscopic or Minimally Invasive Surgery requires an assistant whose sole purpose is to hold the laparoscopic camera. During long surgeries, the camera holding assistant is prone to fatigue affecting the quality and stability of the live image feed being displayed for the operating surgeon. This potentially interferes with the quality of the surgery being performed and may also unnecessarily prolong the surgery. Additionally, the risk of complications during the surgery and conversion to open surgery increases. In particular, smaller health care set ups may not have the qualified and capable assistant available at all times to assist a minimally invasive surgical procedure. Solution: We propose to develop an automated joystick controlled and voice enabled robot, having six degrees of freedom of movement, to replace the assistant during surgeries.
