Sushruta MedTech Innovation Labs and Enabler. SMILE will be a collaborative and co-creative open innovation ideation, incubator accelerator eco-system for development of affordable humanitarian medical technology including but not limited to medical devices, diagnostics, therapeutics, processes and services. The platform will channelize real world challenges provided by medical and healthcare professionals, humanitarian organizations, and need-knowers. These will be curated and categorized by a multi-disciplinary team of medical and technical experts into a database. There is also a vast resource of committed volunteers who are desperately seeking for real world challenges in the healthcare and humanitarian technology field to offer their skills and make a difference. The ongoing successful movement around creating 3D printed low-cost prosthetics is a clear example of what the tip of this iceberg looks like. SMILE will create a global movement and bring together this community of student entrepreneurs, makers, tinkerers, artists, designers, humanitarians, teachers, parents, engineers, philanthropists, inventors and common folk, who with their expertise, skills, knowledge, motivation, mentorship and openness create affordable and accessible solutions to the real world challenges, These solutions will then be validated, prototyped, customized, deployed and distributed through a network of connected humanitarians. All this will be orchestrated at the contemporary SMILE maker lab and incubation center with access to a pool of high quality technologists medical professionals, mentors/leaders with global experience, competent stakeholder management, and the domain relevant business eco-system to the propel the carefully selected incubatees into success, in shortest possible cycle-times adhering to all regulatory, and compliance requirements with highest levels of ethics. We will be the first organization to systematically source curated challenges from the field, bring together a network of technologists and innovators, develop open access medical technology (hardware and software), provide a repository of crowd sourced and open cross platform solutions and ideas, create a deployment mechanism for these solutions to be validated and disseminated back in the field. The site will allow the users to visualize and navigate thousands of challenges and solutions to best fit their needs. They will be able to download and customize these solutions. Even though this will be a well-orchestrated multi-disciplinary team the impetus will be to empower local maker communities and maker spaces to make locally. This will not only enable collaborative, customizable solutions but also make them affordable and accessible. A self-organizing points system will promote distributed leadership while a market place will showcase stories of success and failing forward. An integrative distribution and deployment structure, along with consultation and capacity building will also ensure a sustainable revenue stream.
