Susthira Bhavanam Foundation is a non profit making company, registered under section 8 of Indian company's. As the name suggests, we are engaged in planning and promoting Sustainable habitat systems in Kerala. We aim to address the issues related to environmental, socio-cultural and economical aspects faced by the rural communities of Kerala by designing, creating and popularizing sustainable, low cost, healthy, aesthetically sound homes and associated lifestyles leading to curtailment of factors that contribute to global climate change. Our mission is not to solve problems but to enable communities to create and manage sustainable life systems . We have been operational for more than two years, and have been focussing on action research for perfecting sustainable alternative materials and technologies for building construction. We have now completed two pilot projects that not only builds sustainable buildings using eco-friendly, local materials, manpower and technology but also self sufficient in water, energy, food and environmental hygiene. We are now ready and planning to do the following: Institutionalise our endeavours by establishing a Research and Knowledge Sharing Centre, that acquires and imparts knowledge pertaining to all (social, cultural, and economical) dimensions of sustainable living, through an iterative process of learning by doing Promote and strengthen community self help groups to take up creating sustainable life systems in general and sustainable habitats in particular We are happy to mention here that, after the initial period of one year (which we call a transition phase - from R&D to production), all our activities shall become self supporting, thanks to our unique management strategy.
