TinkerTech Laboratories Private Limited (TinkerTech Labs) is a social impact assistive technology startup based out of New Delhi and incubated at IIT Delhi. It was founded in January 2019 by Madhav Lavakare. TinkerTech Labs’ mission is to design and build accessible and innovative assistive technology solutions for people with disabilities and enrich their lives through technology-enabled empowerment. Our first product is TranscribeGlass. TranscribeGlass is an affordable, lightweight, wearable assistive technology device for people including the d/Deaf, Hard of Hearing (HoH), and elderly, who want to read captioned speech and conversation while watching the speaker in order to receive non-verbal communication cues, increase their environmental and situational awareness, and improve comprehension. TranscribeGlass projects closed captions from any source onto a heads-up display in the user’s field of vision in near-real-time, thereby greatly enhancing their ability to understand the conversations. Caption sources include Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), streaming human captioning (CART/stenography), and subtitle files. The mobile app running on an Android mobile device, using the caption source's API, sends the captions to the device's heads-up display via BlueTooth Low Energy. The captions are overlaid onto the user’s vision of the surrounding environment (Augmented Reality) in near-real-time. It can be retrofitted on most spectacle frames, allowing users to use the device as a hardware add-on/accessory. Unlike existing alternatives that are unaffordable, ineffective, inconvenient, or inaccessible, TranscribeGlass is currently the only affordable solution for people, including those with hearing loss, that displays captioned conversations on a heads-up display in the user’s field of vision, thereby greatly enhancing their ability to understand the conversation.
