The use of natural materials in mainstream construction is often limited; not because of the availability of the raw material itself, but rather by the lack of knowledge and skills for the implementation of vernacular techniques. While resources deplete, societies would want to implement resource-effective, traditional methods to meet their basic needs of Shelter, Food and Water. The healthy and beautiful regional environments that humans learned to develop over generations are fast being replaced with toxic and contaminated spaces. The original circle of local wisdom passed on from generation to generation is rapidly vanishing in the race for modernity. Under strong globalization trends, regional identities are slowly disappearing. Artisans themselves guard their secrets, or seldom know how to share their wisdom with the world. They lack the tools to communicate or the motive to teach and reach out to modern architects. Architects and engineers need to learn traditional wisdom, vernacular techniques and the use of natural materials. Handmade architecture is a way of building where everyone can come together to learn and build with their own hands. It is very much the ancient way of the building where traditional knowledge is passed on from father to child, master to apprentice. We have been evolving a way of a building where the sharing of knowledge is an integral part of the building design and construction process. We understand that the process is more important than the product. Masters of the traditional trades are to be empowered as teachers. People interested in deep learning are to be empowered as apprentices to work and learn with the masters. Every project and workshop with us is a unique opportunity for the exchange of knowledge. In a project/workshop, masters are invited to teach and share their knowledge while building with apprentices. The apprentices, in the process, have an opportunity to build lasting relationships with masters and other apprentices. These lasting relationships and connections result in more relevant projects together and a deeper learning process.
