What this map is not
It is not the whole register. 3,97,642 companies are on the Startup India register and are not on this map, because we hold no funding evidence for them, or no coordinate we believe. Every one of them still has a page, browsable by district, state and pincode.
It is also not all funding. 9,832 of the companies here are on the map because a state startup scheme has them on file, which is a government-recorded fact and not evidence that anyone gave them money. The investor portfolio filter is the strongest evidence we hold, and it is 66 companies.
Location precision
Bar widths are the real proportions. Only the 1,58,514 records with a street-level coordinate are ever drawn as a pin. Everything else is drawn as an area, because that is what we actually know.

A district circle is a count placed at a centroid, not a location: it says how many companies registered an address somewhere in that district, and nothing about where they sit inside it. How we counted sets out how a record earns each tier, and why only the top one is ever drawn as a pin.
