What the register says about Tamil Nadu
The numbers the report opens with, counted from the August 2026 snapshot. The same figures are on Startups in Tamil Nadu, and they will not differ.

| Districts on the register | 102 |
| Districts with a page (25+ startups) | 42 |

| Largest district | Chennai, 15,662 (52.2%) |
| Largest category | IT Services, 3,732 |
| Seed Fund approved | Rs 82.0 crore across 18 incubators |
| Seed Fund disbursed | Rs 57.9 crore (71% of approved) |
The government's count beside ours
| Our count | 30,009 |
|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu, the government's state facet | 31,422 |
| Difference | -1,413 (-4.5%) |
A gap is expected and is not an error in either number: ours counts resolved companies after merging duplicate profiles, the government's counts profiles.
What stands out
Tamil Nadu draws 10.9% of the Seed Fund pot on 6.6% of the register: Rs 82.0 crore approved across 18 incubators, of which Rs 57.9 crore has been disbursed. Chennai holds 52.2% of the state and Coimbatore 13.6%, which makes it one of the few large states whose second city is not a rounding error. The funding-signal rate, 12.7%, runs above the 10.5% national figure, though a signal here means a public mention of money raised and nothing more.
Chennai holds 15,662 of the state's 30,009, 52.2%, and Coimbatore is second with 4,095. IT Services is the largest category with 3,732 companies. The government's own facet for Tamil Nadu counts 31,422 against our 30,009; the report prints both and explains the gap rather than hiding it. The Seed Fund has approved Rs 82.0 crore across 18 incubators here and disbursed Rs 57.9 crore, which is the ledger chapter 6 prints per incubator.
Registration is not an operating signal. A large share of registered startups are dormant, and we have no way to tell you which. A scheme registration is not money. How we counted.
Composed from the August 2026 counts. Edition 1 replaces this with the report's own written summary.

Pages from the 53-page Tamil Nadu PDF: the cover, the first data table and the first chart. Every chapter is set the same way, A4, with the caveat it needs at the foot of the page.
Who it is for
- Sales and lead-gen teams
- A filterable list with website and CIN. Registration is not activity and we say so; every row carries what the register holds, you can filter to companies with all six evidence marks, and the first 25 rows of any filter are free.
- Ecosystem professionals
- A citable, designed report for a deck or a tender: eight things the site does not have, from the monthly curve since 2016 to the tax-exemption applications, with Lucknow open in full so you can judge the series before buying into it.
- Investors and researchers
- Companies by industry, district, stage and evidence, in four honest classes and never one "funded" boolean, plus the exemption applications nobody else publishes. We hold no amounts and we never fake them.

Five questions
- What is in the Tamil Nadu report?
- 14 chapters over 53 pages: What the register says about Tamil Nadu, How the register grew, What Tamil Nadu's startups do, Stage, and 10 more, ending in the methodology and an appendix. It comes as a PDF and as chapters inside the research portal, and one purchase covers every refreshed edition of this report for 12 months.
- Is it just the Indian Startup Map website printed to PDF?
- No. Eight things the site does not have: the monthly registration curve since 2016, capital bands, every pincode ranked, the peer table, the government's count beside ours, the 60 best-evidenced in one table, the Seed Fund ledger, and the tax-exemption applications. The free chapter on this page is the one part that overlaps with Startups in Tamil Nadu, and the whole Lucknow report is open so you can see the other 13 chapters before paying for any.
- How fresh is the Tamil Nadu report?
- It is built from the August 2026 snapshot of the register, edition 1. The register is swept monthly and each sweep produces a new edition; a Report buyer receives every edition of this report for 12 months. Nothing in it claims growth across snapshots until two exist to compare.
- Can I get the list of Tamil Nadu startups instead?
- The report is chapters, not rows. The rows are in Explore on the research portal: the count for any filter is free, the first 25 rows with website and CIN on a free account, 200 per search on Library, and every row with a CSV or XLSX export on Pro, 5,000 rows a file and never the address line.
- What does "registered" mean here?
- Registration is not an operating signal. A large share of registered startups are dormant, and we have no way to tell you which. A startup on this register filled in a Startup India profile. 15,308 of Tamil Nadu's 30,009 carry DPIIT recognition, which is a status the portal shows and not a check we ran. Registration is not incorporation, and it is not activity.
