Iron deficiency is the largest mineral deficiency in the world. according to WHO, 80% of the world's population is not getting adequate iron for their body and 30% population is anemic. In India more than 50% of females and 60% of growing children 23% males are anemic. 50% of premature deaths and disabilities are because of iron deficiency. It affects the health and life span of people and also the GDP growth of the country. GDP loss is approx 1% in India. In growing children, iron deficiency impacts their studies like lack of concentration, low memory, laziness in the classroom, abstain at school, and co-curricular activities. Women of reproductive age due to their monthly blood loss and growing children need more iron for their growth are more prone to this deficiency. Iron deficiency is not a disease, this deficiency has to be corrected with iron-rich food. we get non-heme iron from vegetables and fruits, but iron absorption is only 2% to 5% if it's not accompanied by any vitamin C-rich foods. heme iron we get from animal products are not economical and vegetarian can't consume it. The iron-deficient person will show many symptoms like tiredness, palpitation, frustration, menstrual cramps, hair fall, craving for non-edible foods, aging, depression, muscle cramps, menstrual migraine, and many more. Awareness of iron deficiency in society is not up to the mark, hence people take the symptoms for granted and generalize.
