In their own words
Care farming is gaining increased attention and more importance globally due to its immense benefits in health care sector. In today’s run for earning and saving, peoples of various categories of the society (corporate administrators, IT professionals, employees without job satisfaction, unemployed graduates, housewives, poor with low income) are constantly vulnerable to mental stress in various degrees, ranging from mild depression to severe schizophrenic conditions (Cheryl Corcoran, 2009). There are a number of patients with psychiatric problems, autism, dementia, physical disabilities etc, who require special care. Urbanization and changes in culture and lifestyle have eroded peace of mind in many people (Gruebner, 2017). Care farm is a of 'Green Care' that will be extending a therapeutic environment for those suffering from a range of health problems to spend time and working in agricultural/horticultural activities as a means of promoting mental and physical health and social wellbeing. It is a nature-based therapy or treatment interventions - specifically designed, structured and facilitated for individuals with a defined need by use of farms and agricultural landscapes as a base for promoting mental and physical health, through normal farming activity. There is evidence that care farming shows physical, mental and social benefits including health, physical skills, self-esteem, mood improvement, social skills, responsibility (Jan Hassink, 2017). There are proven economic benefits of care farming as a form of diversification and enhancing farmers'income (Ann Hemingway et al., 2016). It provides a kind of non- medical intervention that provides peace of mind, achieved by communication, creativity, activity, acceptance, solitude, connection, and contribution in a more nature based way. The care farm team will comprise of professionals in the health, social care and education sectors as well as the care farming community. The project will establish regionally-based networks and care farmer expert teams which will plan according to the local requirements. To venture into this new paradigm of public health care, SRM Care Farm will be established which will also be a ecotourism centre for school children and general public to spend time and enjoy the natural eco environment. SRM Care Farm will also endeavour to serve the farmers and public interested in urban farming by producing eco-products for supporting crops and plants. It has been documented that the care farm or the social farming has linked the aspects of traditional healthcare system to agriculture, healing gardens, conservation of natural resources and animal husbandry (Haubenhofer et al., 2010). This proposal aims at establishing a Care Farm and provide green care services to people; educate professionals on care farming; and provide support to establish care farms as farm diversification and enhance farm incomes and promote employment . In care farming, care of the farm is combined with care of people. SRM Care Farm will be the first of its kind in India and will become a pioneer in providing green public health care.
