Diabetes mellitus is associated with chronic complications that lead to high morbidity and mortality rates in young adults of productive age. India is the diabetes capital of the world. Insulin and other anti-diabetic medications / regimens only ‘control’ the diabetes. The only ‘cure’ is pancreatic / islet cell transplantation. Pancreas transplantation may not be suitable for all patients; islet cells transplants can help a lot more people as its less invasive and more utopian as an approach. There are only 14 islet cell isolation organizations in the world, with none in Southeast Asia. We believe that India needs at least one to start with, such an attempt will be yet another milestone in India’s journey in retaining leadership in the health care industry. In Human Pancreatic Islet transplantation, islets are taken from the pancreas of a deceased organ donor. The islets are purified, processed, and transferred into another person. Once implanted, the beta cells in these islets begin to make and release insulin. Islet cell transplantation can reinforce the potential of beta cell replacement for the treatment of type 1diabetes and will give hope to many diabetic patients that they may one day be free from the risk of secondary complications and the daily burden of insulin injections.
