CEEPL Vision About Ventilator Product Initiative In the present COVID 19 pandemic situation, availability of ventilators is identified as one of the challenges. Many companies and individuals enthusiasts have been working on prototyping of various concepts which can be deployed if frontline equipments are not available. Specific problems have been identified for the ventilators to handle present situation. For example PEEP valve may have shortage of availability as the product has not been used for decades. Decontamination of exhale air is unique necessity of present situation. Necessity of minimum digital controls to provide set-ability and monitoring of critical clinical parameters is crucial and will enable effective usage of the ventilators by paramedical staff. Highest priority today is medical staff safety and effort optimization. IOT compatibility of the Ventilator system will enable centralized monitoring of multiple patients through necessary alarms and warnings. In light of the challenges of availability of basic materials the ventilator design needs to be conceived around self reliance principle with lowest dependency on imports. Liberty of development bandwidth is in hardly affordable. Thus quick repurposing of currently available resources is the key to the success. Resource augmentation through collaborative working is an essence. Thus the development should aim at modular independent products which can be used by other stake holders in their design. IP rigidity walls need to be made appropriately thinner and reciprocated through responsible usage. CEEPL Along with Associate partners have developed four solutions to fight prevailing pandemic situation. 1. Diaphragm based PEEP valve : a backup design in case, off the shelf PEEP valves are not available. 2. Exhale air decontamination system: A modular heater system with temp up to 90°C which can hold contaminated air for 1 second. We call it “EkShanHeater”. Multiple modules can be cascaded to achieve required contact time. EkShan Heater module is put in line with the exhale piping using necessary filters to completely destroy virus contamination. 3. Ventilator controller to enable setting and monitoring of critical parameters: Locally available mobile screen are used as the monitoring and control device. Critical sensors like pressure and flow in the patient inhale circuit are integrated with the hardware to provide necessary monitoring with alarms, warning and trips. The system can be extended to IOT platform to enable centralized monitoring for the medical authorities. Generic drive control interface is provided to control air compression systems as per alarm and trip conditions. The drive control system can be quickly customized for any ventilator design around induction motor, stepper motor, DC motor, servomotor, dual stroke, CAM type and any other configuration. 4. Ambu bag-based ventilator system: This the integrated solution to realise high feature Ventilator system. Unique features being, two side drive for high respiratory rates, Controlled compression, Ambu bag volume calibration for tidal volume estimation, localized programmable controls possible for frugal solutions. All the above products have passed prototype phase. The designs ensure least dependency on imported components. Team continues to work on challenges. Identified tasks for next phase 1. Development of flow sensor based on venturi effect. 2. FIO2 Monitoring using flow sensors at Inlet O2 and Air circuit 3. Development of CPAP feature
