In their own words
Introduction of business Hi! I’m Dr Manasi Kulkarni, Founder and CEO of Dough Adventures. At DA, we are building nutritionally dense, low glycemic index alternatives to junk food to maintain a balanced diet. We have modified traditional Indian foods like millets, amaranth, jackfruit etc into modern formats like noodles, pasta etc to appeal to children as well as global tastebuds. Why are you building this business? Childhood obesity in India is 20% mainly due to improper snacking habits with white, maida based food. Maida is linked with obesity as it increases hunger pangs throughout the day which often leads to unhealthy snacking. Maida based 2 min food has high glycemic index- main cause of post meal blood sugar rise leading to huge diabetic population. A millennial parent is conscious of the perils of junk food consumption of his/her kid. A mother understands the significance of all round nutrition in her child’s diet but it gets difficult for her to handle her picky eater who demands junk food. However, existing Ready to Cook Food (RTC) options are doing more harm than good. This has created a Large Market Gap in the RTC food segment, which is unaddressed by scaled brands. Why now? Post pandemic, people have become conscious of the effects of day to day products on their body. Brands like Mamaearth have created a place in the minds of moms that yes, there are convenience products without harmful effects available in the market. Same applies to food for children as well. It can be convenient as well as nourishing to the growing child. 2023 has been declared as the International year of Millets. This is a push from the government to promote traditional Indian food on a global level. This is like what was done for branding Yoga and you know that the Yoga industry boomed internationally after that. All these reasons are why now is the right time to scale Dough Adventures! Why are you the best team? Brief Profile of each founder. At Dough Adventures, we are a team of doctors, nutritionists and food technologists who are building the products. We know our products from grain to gut! Simply put, the domain expertise ranges from RnD of grain selection to how to process it for minimal nutrition loss to how these grains react to the body. I, Dr Manasi am a doctor turned entrepreneur. During my clinical practice, I got interested in medical devices and got selected for Fellowship program at AIIMS, New Delhi for School of International Biodesign. Post the fellowship, I have worked with a startup on painless blood glucose monitoring for diabetic children. Dough Adventures is a continuation of work on diabetes and children. Dough Adventures work is also selected for Professional Fellows Exchange program- Oklahoma University- Spring 23 as plant based, vegan movement is on rise in US. Dr Sneha has 30 years of clinical experience on working on Women and Child health. Over 3 decades, she has seen dietary habits changing with an increase in lifestyle disorders. Rucha is the lead nutritionist with 2 years of clinical experience and 2 years of RnD on Indian grains. She has done her degree on nutrition from Univeristy of Illinois. She has also done costumer validation in US and we have received positive response. Prajakta is a food technologist with 8 years of RnD and QA-QC experience. She is also an alumnus of PEP fellows program. We also have Prashant Godbole from Ideas@work advising us on Advertising and Marketing. He has 15 years of experience on working for branding of Rustomjee, Airtel etc. He is a 2 times Cannes Gold winner. How Big can this become? Revenue Model Dough Adventures aspires to be a staple in every kids diet. We aim to create a go to choice for moms for healthy convenient cooking. We aim to be the largest FMCG player in food segment for children by replacing Nestle, Mondelez, ITC in the FMCG space. We launched our products starting with 4 SKUs in July 2022 at Mumbai and sold our products at MT,GT IN mUMBAI Received a good traction from our customers as well as consumers for the nutrition and taste, generated sales of INR 1.8 lakhs with negligible efforts put over marketing. The way India introduced Yoga to the whole world, Similarly, now Indian government is at the forefront to raise awareness of traditional Indian cuisine throughout the world. As an effort to it, 2023 has been declared as the International year of Millets by United Nations at the behest of the Government of India. All of these factors combine to make now an excellent time to embark on Dough Adventures! We are targeting Retail- Modern Trade space as well as D2C space for revenue generation. Why would big players not do this? In a process to make products refined flour free and additive free, traditional methods of manufacturing cannot be used for millet based products. We have developed proprietary manufacturing processes which are currently trade secret.
