In their own words
We started this venture to create a direct rural impact in the Himalayan region, beginning with our home state of Sikkim. As we all know that the farmers of the Himalayan region are always sidelined and have never really been able to take advantage of the resources be they natural or cultivated. Therefore, we at EARTHIER, after doing considerable research decided to get into the cultivation and processing of a plant called Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolious). Yacon also known as Ground Apple is a Peruvian root crop known for its numerous health benefits. We at EARHTIER have pioneered the cultivation and processing of Yacon in Sikkim, India, and hope to bring it to the other Himalayan states of the country. This crop has the potential to be like Dragon Fruit but a cash crop solely for Himalayan farmers. How have we benefitted the farmers of Sikkim? They have benefited in numerous ways some of which are market linkage, reduced crop damage from human-wildlife conflict, higher productivity in comparison to other cash crops, multiples usages of the Yacon plant, lower input costs, etc. Over the course of our work, we have impacted more than 500 farmers in Sikkim by directly injecting more than Rs. 2 crores. We have also set up a micro-processing unit in a rural area that employs 25 people from the surrounding region. Our work has also made a positive impact on the health of our customers. We process the Yacon roots into Yacon Syrup, this syrup has numerous health benefits such as it helps in blood sugar management, weight loss, obesity, high blood pressure, reducing bad cholesterol, constipation, improving digestion, improving mineral absorption, etc. Therefore, syrup addresses many lifestyle diseases that have gripped our society. Since we got our product out into the market we have positively impacted the lives of more than 30,000 customers and hope to continue doing so.
