With a population of 1.37 billion, India generates 9.46 MN tons of plastic wastes annually. Around 40% of this remains uncollected making India the 15th biggest plastic polluters globally, study by Un-Plastic Collective, a voluntary initiative launched by UN Environment Programme, CII and WWF India. Another 43 per cent out of that is used for packaging, most of which are single-use, a new study has revealed. Urban India, comprising of about 377 million people, generates 62 million tons of municipal solid waste each year; 70% of this is collected. Only 20% of this is treated, while 50% is dumped into landfill sites. With changing consumption patterns and rapid economic growth, it is estimated that urban municipal solid waste generation will increase to 165 million tons in 2030. Belgium is a pioneer in waste and recycling management. By investing in India, through its 100% subsidiary Gemcorp Recycling & Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Gemini Corporation N.V., Belgium, aims to install 650 machines by 2024 to collect and bail approx. 165,000 tonnes (364 million pounds) of plastic waste annually apart from regular trading, which is targeted at 82,500 tonnes (182 million pounds) annually, totalling to the recycling of 247,500 tonnes (546 million pounds). Gemini is also planning to install a grinding unit which will further ease the requirement of recyclers and increase the capacity of aggregators. It also aims to install a recycling unit which will increase the capacity in India to recycle more and more plastic wastes. Gemcorp is introducing one advanced mobile technological application which will bridge the gap between the waste generators and aggregators.
