GREEMANITY INDUSTRIES LLP
Ahmedabad, Gujarat
In their own words
In India, about 7.76 lakh ha area is under banana crop with the total fruit production of 26.5 million MT contributing 14.7% of global production (Anon., 2013-14). In India, the area under banana is increasing steadily because of higher return as compared to other crops. Apart from fruit, banana crop also generate huge quantity of biomass in the form of Pseudostem, leaves, suckers etc. At present, this biomass particularly Pseudostem is absolute waste in most of the states of India. Not only this, but for disposing Pseudostem presently farmers are spending about 15000 to 20000 INR/ha. Disposal of Pseudostem in a routine way i.e., dumping on field bunds and burning, disposing in gutter lines/ natural drains etc., causes environmental problems. Pseudostem obtained as a waste from banana farms can be converted to products like handmade papers, high valve papers, paper bags and cups, woven and non-woven fabrics, handicrafts and microcrystalline cellulose (pharmaceutical grade) using banana fiber, enriched sap (organic liquid fertilizer), mordant from sap, vermicompost, handmade paper from scutcher and edible products (candy, Ready to Serve drinks, pickles) from central core. Our project envisages to start-up with: 1. Production of Organic liquid fertilizer from SAP obtained from waste banana pseudostems. 2. Extraction of Banana fibers from stems and manufacture handmade papers which have varied applications both domestically and globally. 3. Manufacture candies from central core which have high nutritional value. 4. Non-woven products prepared using banana fibers. 5. Preparation of Yarn from fibers both blended and banana fiber grade once fine quality yarn is obtained from the same. Banana fibers have high strength owing to which it has tremendous applications. Fibers can be used to make ropes, handicraft items, MCC (Microcrystalline cellulose), yarn etc. Handmade papers are generally used for making wedding cards, visiting cards, files, Cheque paper, lamp shades, artistic paper, hand bags, calligraphy papers, hardboards etc. Handmade papers have a lot of export potential. Demand exceeds supply in case of handmade papers exports from our nation. These papers can also be used to make paper bags, cups, bowls etc. Thick papers can be used make corrugated boxes for industrial applications.
