What is the title of your innovation? Cotton Picking device 2. What problem does your innovation solve? In India, cotton picking is carried out manually by labors. Labor picks up the cotton by hand and it is laborious task. Hands of labors are injured because of pointed cotton bolls shell. The cotton bolls are at various height making the effort a drudgery. It is very difficult to get the labor for cotton picking at a time of cotton harvesting. The cost of manual cotton picking is around 5-7 Rs / kg. Average cotton picked up by labor in India is 30-40 kg/day. 3. How will your innovation solve this problem? The developed portable cotton picking device works on 12V DC battery. It is hand held device very light in weight. It has been designed to pick cotton from cotton bolls and transports it to collection bag. Due to increased reach of the device the picking is less tiring. There will not be physical contact of labor’s hands with cotton bolls, thus the problem of injury has been completely eliminated. Average cotton picking by the developed machine is around 60-80 kg/day. The efficiency of worker will be almost doubled as compared to manual picking of cotton there by reducing the cost of picking by at least Rs 2/- per Kg. 4. What makes your innovation ‘inclusive’? The developed portable cotton picking device is light in weight. It has been ergonomically designed to minimize the stress on labor’s hand (mostly women). It increases the productivity of labor by 100 % as compared with manual cotton picking completely protecting them from injury. The device is economic, affordable to marginal farmer and maintenance free. The cost saving in picking improves the earning of the farmer while the drudgery of worker is reduced considerably. 5. What is (or will be) the final cost of your innovation for a consumer (₹)? The cost of developed device including a cotton storage bag, battery and battery holder, battery charger, cleaning forceps, boll holder stick, will be INR 7200/- inclusive of all taxes. At expected picking of about 5000 kg cotton in a season by this device, its cost will be recovered in a single season. The expected life is about 3 seasons. 6. Which stage is your innovation currently in? The prototype has been tested extensively. The product, after tooled up samples have been sold to farmers in Marathwada Region (Aurnagabad, Maharashtra) in January 2018. Additional objects of the invention Object of the invention is to provide a Portable hand operated Cotton Picking device, which is smaller and lighter in weight. Another object of the invention is to make the cotton harvesting fatigue free and injury to the Labour should be eliminated. Another objective of portable hand operated cotton machine is to improve the efficiency of Labour by 100 % as compared with manual cotton picking process. The proposed portable cotton picking has a unique cotton picking mechanism with an enhanced reach. The objective is to reduce the fatigue of worker and increase the efficiency thus increasing the harvesting efficiency. Yet another object of the invention is to provide a portable cotton picker, which is easy to operate and maintain. One more objective of developed cotton picking machine is to eliminate investment in heavy machinery and maintenance and save machine storage space.
