The 2018 ASER report found that only 43% of students in the 14 to 18 years age group are able to do simple division correctly. This situation is largely due to the fact that most schools are unable to attract passionate teachers who can change these statistics. Schools which are able to provide the necessary infrastructure and training to teachers are accessible primarily to children from high-income families. Others are left to fend for themselves. Many use the limited options (schools, tuitions) available locally to them. More ambitious parents are influenced by claims in advertisements to enroll their wards in coaching centers in big cities such as Pune and Mumbai. This involves tedious relocation, economic and mental stress for parents and students. Moreover, this excludes female and poorer students who do not have the same mobility as their middle-class peers. The enrollment in these centers is skyrocketing but the results prove that this is a futile and often wasteful effort. This is resulting in generations of students who are able to score close to 100% in board exams, yet are unable to qualify in exams such as JEE. This dismal state of affairs is hindering India’s progress in STEM. Solution: Our USP is three-tiered: learning engine technology which can be adapted for any content, research-backed pedagogy and presence in small towns. We are priced at ⅓ of traditional coaching classes. Our products are targeted at two types of user/customer: 1. Students Our foundation toolkit will equip high school students with deep conceptual understanding and the confidence to tackle challenging problems. Our competitive exam toolkit is for 11th and 12th standards, specially designed keeping in mind entrance exams. The focus is not just to help them crack the exam, but also to empower them for more challenging STEM futures. These toolkits can be used at Ignus centres or for self-study at home. They comprise modules for each concept where each module comprises recorded lectures from world-class professors, scientific simulations, and practice problems from our own AI-based adaptive question bank. The in-class teacher’s role is to keep up with each student’s pace and capability by clearing doubts. This data is captured by our learning engine to enable co-creation and customization of each session. 2. Schools/Tuition centres Our school toolkit will adhere more strictly to the curriculum so the students will have more imaginative resources than textbooks to study syllabus-prescribed concepts.
