In their own words
Over 15 million people worldwide suffer a stroke each year; an additional 0.5 million suffer spinal cord injuries from accidents annually which is a cause of gait impairment, in the age group of 15 to 59. Although the majority of stroke-affected patients achieve independent walking, chronic gait abnormalities persist. And also, due to a rapidly increasing aging population and its associated challenges in health and social care, Ambient Assistive Living has become the focal point for both researchers and industry alike. In particular walking (Gait) is also closely related to the overall health conditions of an elderly person. Lastly, an increasing number of patient admissions has created pressure on available healthcare resources augmenting the demand for centralized solutions. The company aims to develop an affordable platform, which includes a Gait Analysis and Functional Electrical Stimulator system, to operate in extremely low resource settings; yet achieve similar accuracies in the measurements and diagnosis/analysis as compared to the state of the art systems. Our techniques will compute (and predict) gait characteristics in the presence of significant noise (typical of wearable sensors) and compute optimal motor nerve stimulation signals. Recent advances in data-driven event-triggered technologies will be leveraged to design novel FES systems to provide real-time stimulation whenever an anomaly is detected. Our systems are modular in design, this means that GA and FES can be done for a single limb or multiple limbs; depending on the requirement. Adding additional modules will follow a plug and play approach. Low-cost hardware combined with sophisticated software and cloud-enabled analytics will make the system affordable. A mobile phone with a basic data pack will be sufficient to access the entire gamut of our cloud-based solutions. Our devices are capable of early detection of ailments and also provide them with solutions to improve their balance and improve their basic motor skills. The ability to personalize treatment, with our modular platform, can lead to better control of the movement and more importantly - can lead to a natural gait.
